Welcome to the Music Department of St. Mary’s Church, Rostock, Germany!
St.
Mary’s is one of the largest brickstone gothic churches in the baltic region. Since nearly 780 years it is a place of worship and the heart of our city. Rostock, a university town of 200.000 inhabitants, is situated
on the baltic coast, east of Lübeck and Wismar and west of Stralsund, Greifswald and Gdansk. Our church is part of the cultural heritage of the Hanse, a mediaeval trading association of northern Europe.
The music ministry at St. Mary’s offers eight different groups, and most of them take part in
covering the musical needs of services and liturgy at St. Mary’s, as they contribute to the cultural life of the city.
Services are held every Sunday at 9.30 p.m. with few exceptions. From May to October, a 10-minute
noon prayer is held in the nave at 12.00, shortly after our famous Astronomical Clock from 1473 has presented its famous Reel of the Apostles, together with chiming an ancient chorale.
St. Mary’s tower houses six ringing bells and one chiming bell. The bells have been cast in ~1300,
1379, 1406, ~1450, 1554 and 2011. The bellframe’s oldest beams date from the 15th century, and the whole ringing chamber is one of the famous sites of its kind in the baltic region.
Beside those musical gems, the church houses more works of art from different epoques.
The English version of this website is a small summary of the German version.
